| Often form a gelatinous or leathery thallus attached at bottom |
| Trichomes brilliant blue-green or olive green in color |
| Cells not distinctly separated, but may show some constriction at crosswalls |
| Rarely quadrate, cells 1-2 times broader than long (1-3 µm long) |
| Cylindrical cells with end cells rounded or oval |
| Trichomes range from 1-2.5 µm in diameter |
| Firm sheath present, sometimes agglutinated, sometimes thin and colorless |
| Trichomes non-motile |
